Who this tool is for
Sheep and beef producers in southern Australia who use pasture and supplementary feed.
Questions this tool answers
For sheep and beef production in southern Australia:
- What is the likely animal production from the existing pasture?
- What are the supplementary feed requirements to the existing pasture, for maintenance or for production outcomes?
What this tool does
GrazFeed calculates the energy and protein requirements of sheep and cattle grazing a particular pasture or being lot fed. GrazFeed can help you to:
- decide what level of annual production a particular pasture will support
- select the most suitable feeds to use
Inputs
You enter into GrazFeed:
- estimates of pasture availability and quality
- a description of your grazing animals, including number and type
Outputs
Based on your inputs, Grazfeed outputs a report including data on:
- energy and protein requirements of your animals
- supplement cost per head
- expected animal production and weight gain
- expected protein metabolism, methane and faeces output per animal
Figures 1 and 2 are examples of Grazfeed output charts. A full example report is also available.
Reliability
GrazFeed can be applied to any temperate or tropical grazing system where sheep or cattle graze pasture rather than browse shrubs.
History
GrazFeed was developed by the CSIRO Agriculture Flagship (formerly CSIRO Plant Industries) in Canberra, and is distributed and supported by Horizon Agriculture.
