What this tool does

The Last Effective Flower Tool estimates the date of the last effective flower in a season that will contribute to a harvestable boll, based on historical climate data from the Bureau of Meteorology’s SILO database.

This is particularly useful if you have cotton crops that will mature late due to late planting or in-season setbacks.

Inputs

  • your nearest weather station
  • date of the last harvestable boll, defined either by daily minimum temperature or calendar date for when the last harvestable boll will open.

Outputs

The tool gives you the earliest, the latest and the average date on which the last effective square, flower and harvestable boll occurs. 

You can also view the date of last effective flower, square, and harvestable boll for your region for each year post 1957.

History

The tool was developed and is maintained by CSIRO. It is apart of a group of CSIRO web tools, designed for Australian cotton growers and consultants, called CottASSIST.

CottASSIST aims to deliver the latest cotton research and integrate up-to-date information and assist with cotton management decisions. Developed by CSIRO, it is supported by the Cotton Research and Development Corporation and the former Cotton Catchment Communities CRC.
